This is an issue that’s unfortunately still overlooked when people try to get rid of fleas in their home. Flea eggs are the main population of a flea infestation, with up to 90% of the fleas being in the flea egg stage. A female flea lays more than 30 eggs per day, so you could be dealing with hundreds of fleas within days and thousands within weeks. Studies show that for every flea you have in your home, there are more than 100 flea eggs. You can stop the flea life cycle by vacuuming floors and carpets daily and preventing the flea eggs from hatching with IGR, also known as Insect Growth Regulator. We will get back to this later in this article.
Flea eggs can be hard to spot as they are less than 0.5 mm in size, white and sometimes even transparent. Some people think they look like small grains of salt or dandruff. The first place to find these is on your pets, but they quickly roll off and land all around in your home. Don’t confuse the flea dirt or flea droppings you find on your pets with flea eggs. Flea dirt sticks to the fur, flea eggs don’t. They fall off easily and land on carpets, couches, beds and so on. They will also fall off when your dog or cat scratches itself, and this will happen often when the flea bites start to itch.
How to get rid of flea eggs
When I got my first flea infestation, I searched all around the internet looking for solutions to get rid of fleas. I found lots of ways to do this and it seemed to work. I did get rid of all the fleas in my home for a while, but then they returned. Months passed by and I fought one flea infestation after another. Then I stumbled upon a spray that would not only kill living fleas, but also stop the growth of fleas in earlier stages. This is where most people fail and the reason why fleas are considered such a big problem today.
The correct and most effective procedure for getting rid of flea eggs is to wash all blankets, bedding, sheets and pillows to get rid of both living fleas and flea eggs. You then need to vacuum all floors, carpets and furniture. Do this every day to make sure you get every single flea egg. It only takes one flea to continue the population. Now it’s time to use the spray that prevent fleas from reproducing and growing. It’s called IGR flea spray and it stands for Insect Growth Regulator. Spray all the areas where your pets rest as these are the most obvious places to find flea eggs. Then use the spray on your carpets and furniture.
IGR flea spray won’t kill adult fleas, so you need to do something else about them. If you have a serious flea infestation, you could try a flea bomb (also called a flea fogger). Be sure to cover anything you don’t want pesticide on and get all your pets outside your home before you do so. Flea bombs can get to areas where your vacuum cleaner can’t. It’s a very effective way to kill all living fleas inside a room. Another effective way to get rid of fleas is with a steam cleaner that kills fleas instantly with hot steam.
Remember to treat your pets
You also need to make sure all the fleas and flea eggs are gone from your pets. My preferred way to do this is to take my dog outside and give him a combing with a flea comb. Afterwards I treat with flea drops, which prevent fleas from attacking and laying eggs. Although I don’t practice it often, you can wash your pets with flea shampoo before applying the flea drops, to get rid of the remaining eggs and adult fleas.
