Do you have a contrarian dog that has to go back to the base? Or a well-behaved dog who wants to learn new tricks? We have expert tips to help you with training.
Teach your dog to sit down
By teaching your dog to sit on command, you control him in almost every situation. A sitting dog can not mischief and if they are uncertain or afraid in a certain situation the “sit” command can calm them down. “Sitting” learning is not that difficult either.
1. Take some tasty things that your dog really likes – it must be something that he can eat quickly so you do not have to interrupt practice! If you train a puppy, make sure it is soft enough for his young teeth – for example
2. Take a lump between thumb and forefinger and fold the rest of your fingers against your palm. Keep the lump close to the nose of your dog, no more than an inch away. Now you should have his attention. Once your dog is concentrated on you (and on the treatment), you continue with the next step.
3. Slowly move the piece up to above its head and hold it there. If your dog lifts his head to nibble on the piece, the bottom automatically goes down. Say “sit” as soon as you see that his butt is going down. (He learns the sitting movement by the word, and later if he understands it you can say it before.) Praise your dog and give him the reward.
If it does not work right away, here are some tips to teach your dog to “sit”.
If your dog is jumping: keep the reward a little lower and do not pull it back if the dog does not raise his head. If your dog is walking backwards instead of sitting down: try to do the exercise against a wall or in a corner so that it can not easily walk backwards. You can also lead the dog with your free hand or you can leave your dog with your free hand, while giving him a reward right away. After trying a few times, he should understand.
If your dog is too excited: try to practice immediately after eating or if he is more comfortable.
You will have to do the exercise in a lot of different places, both at home and outside.
