Your dog is staying and learning is of great importance in education. There are plenty of situations where these commands come in handy. But how do you teach the dog this ?
The enforcement of elementary commands such as sitting, and staying, helps you already in getting your role as a pack leader. Maintaining the sit command for giving food or walking shows dominance in relation to the dog. Sit down and stay are also great alternative methods to get rid of unwanted behavior in the dog. Here is how you can learn this dog step by step :
Sitting is the first thing you have to learn your dog. Before you move on to other obedience activities, your dog must sit down without hesitation if you give this command. Make sure you stay as consistent as possible during the training. Also make sure to keep the sessions short and do not let your dog get frustrated. The dog must find the training as fun as possible.
You need patience to teach your dog to sit. Provide a treat. Soft treats are preferred, as the dog has these faster.
Start with your dog on the line and make sure there are no distractions. Keep a treat just above the nose of your dog and say “sit.” Then you move the treats over his head in the direction of his tail. Your dog will try to keep his eyes on the goodies and this forces him to sit down. If he wants to jump to grab the treat, then you keep it too high. When your dog sits down, give him the treat and reward him. Do this for about five to ten minutes, two or three times a day.
As soon as your dog sits down every time you say “sit” and does not always need a reward for this, you can proceed to learning “off”. Let your dog sit first and give a treat. While he is sitting, hold a new treat between his front legs and say “finish”. When he gets up, tell him to sit down and try again. If he looks down while you have the new treat between the front legs, move this treat over the ground towards you. This must tempt him to a downward position. As soon as he is downstairs, you give the dog the treat.
If you can not lure him in this way try not to force the dog to lie down physically. Sit on the floor with your legs extended and your knees slightly bent. There must be just enough space for your dog to crawl under. Let him sit by your bent knees. Keep the goodies between his front legs and say “off” while you slide his treat under your knees. Your dog will crawl under the legs to get his treats. The moment he lies below his knees, say “off,” and give him the treat and reward him. Do this for about five to ten minutes, two to three times a day. Do not forget to keep working on sitting.
Stay is a very nice command if your dog knows it. During dinner, he can then stay in his place without begging for food, while he is leaving it neatly on the side waiting for him to cross.
To teach your dog to “stay”, give him the command “off”. After he lies down, say: “stay.” Wait a second, then say “well, stay” and give him a treat and a lot of praise. Make sure you only give something tasty if it is still there. If you do not respond quickly enough, you reward him for getting up.
Do this a few times and wait two seconds before you give him the treat. After it remains consistently two seconds, wait for three seconds. If he gets up before you reach three seconds, go back to 2 seconds. Build this up gradually. Do this for five to ten minutes and two to three times a day. Do not try to move it too quickly, otherwise it will take longer.
Eventually you try to keep the dog in a room while you are walking to another room yourself. If he is willing to stay there, even when you are out of the room, reward him exuberantly. Keep working on sitting and sitting down, as this is still fresh in his memory.
Some dogs will have all this quickly mastered while it can take a long time with other dogs. Adapt the learning schedule to your dog, try to stay as calm as possible and reward if he does well. After all, not everyone is equally quick to learn. The most important thing is that your dog should enjoy it. Remember that dogs are extremely sensitive to our moods, so be patient and do not get frustrated.
