Opinions differ when you can best sterilize a bitch.
One says for the first heat around 6-7 months and the other says 3 months after the first heat.
Even veterinarians have different opinions about this.
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has investigated the effects of sterilization in dogs at the age of 6-7 months. This research shows that sterilization at the age of 6-7 months also has a good result.
Earlier research has already shown that the bitch is more likely to have mammary gland tumors, uterine inflammation and diabetes after each heat. Having your bitch sterilized at the age of 6-7 months is a good option.
There is, however, a disadvantage, you do not know when your dog is running for the first time and the hormones may not be active yet when surgery is going to take place.
The Royal Society for Veterinary Medicine has expressed its preference for sterilization after the first heat.
It is best to have your bitch sterilized when the sex hormones of the bitch are not active. This is at least 3 months after the end of the heat and up to 4 weeks before the heat.
If the sterilization is carried out during this period, the risk of hormonal changes is excluded.
So you have the choice to have your dog sterilized for the first heat at 6-7 months or 3 months after her heat.
For advice what is appropriate for your dog, you should consult your own veterinarian.
